What is coaching?

A coach expands your perspective on what’s possible and gives you permission to own the future you can imagine for yourself.

The ICF defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership.

Coaching is client-centered and is there to support you in your leadership role. The client remains at the centre of the coaching conversation and always sets the agenda. The coach helps them to make meaning and find depth of purpose in their leadership journey, by taking account of key themes as and when they arise.

Coaching grows you as a leader through conversation, actions, and awareness—and gets you outside your comfort zone, exploring your own boundaries and becoming aware of the impact you’re having around you.

Sir John Whitmore

“Unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them learn rather than teaching them.”

Brene Brown

“I am here to get it right not be right.”

Coaching builds leadership capacity and enhances professional practice. It gives you time and space to reflect on your values and your leadership purpose. The trickle-down effect is an efficient school with a strong, self-aware leader and this leads to a culture of belonging amongst staff and students.

Coaching in education is a growing field and the best school leaders have a coach.

“Headteachers experience an integration of their professional role and their soul, the link between the professional sensibility and the values of the core self”

Leadership in schools is a complex and often lonely experience.

You juggle the needs of the school, the staff, and yourself. Coaching provides a safe, trusted space to be still, to reflect, and to sort through some of the challenges of school leadership. School leaders often describe their school year as turbulent, difficult, and challenging. Some of the issues that arise are related to time, budget, and staff retention. Others speak of conflict between the school and the body that owns the school. School leaders have hundreds of interactions each day but few opportunities to sit and speak to someone neutral who is trained to listen.

Coaching is recognised as one of the most important and essential leadership skills within education.

  • Coaching leads to a positive impact on senior leaders’ self-belief and confidence

  • Coaching supports school leaders to develop and maintain effective management approaches

  • Coaching of school heads has the potential to help maintain sustainability in the school workforce

  • A coaching program provides a means to support senior leaders both personally and professionally.

  • A coaching program can be beneficial to the senior leaders in many respects and there is evidence of an impact beyond the individual level.
